A Cessna Grand Caravan plane belonging to PT Asian One Air was shot down by the Kelompok Kriminal Bersenjata (KKB) while flying from Timika to Beoga, Papua, on Friday, February 16, 2024.
PAPUA - The plane with registration PK-LTF was carrying nine passengers and managed to land safely in Beoga despite suffering minor damage.
"We can confirm that all passengers and the pilot are safe," said Director General of Air Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, M. Kristi Endah Murni, in Jakarta on Friday.
Kristi explained that the plane was shot at while it was at an altitude of about 300 feet before landing in Beoga. The sound of gunfire was heard from the rear of the plane, but the pilot managed to land the plane safely.
After landing, the pilot and passengers were checked and declared safe. Joint security forces from the TNI/Polri then conducted a search in the area of the incident.
Based on coordination with the security forces and considering the condition of the aircraft, the pilot decided to fly the plane back to Timika. The plane landed in Timika at 02.22 UTC/11.22 WIT.
Kristi said that his office has ordered an investigation into the incident and is continuing to coordinate with the security forces and local government to ensure the safety and security of flights in the area.
"We must get certainty that the safety, security, and comfort of flights on the routes passed by the aircraft can be guaranteed," said Kristi.
